Mossel Bay

When Dias went around the southern point of Africa in 1488 he encountered such a ferocious storm that he named the area " The Cape of Storms". This name is still very true today. Cape storms with massive waves hitting the cliffs are not an uncommon phenomena.

Mossel Bay was the first harbour for ships going around the southern point of Africa en route to the East.

The first posting tree was born during this time. It is said that an officer returning from the East left a letter underneath this tree in a boot. The letter was found by a next officer on his way to the East. An entire posting system started here for the ships going past. The tree is still in Mossel Bay with a boot-shaped post box where a letter can still be posted.

Inside the Maratime museum is a replica of the Dias Caravel. For an admission fee visitors are allowed to explore the Caravel from the inside. The rest of the museum is also interesting and informative but the the Caravel is the obvious attraction. The museum is within walking distance from the Post Office Tree. As in all tourist towns you will find many craft shops with authetic South African crafts.

Seal Island deserves a trip. If the sea is not too stormy and unpleasant there are small boats going to seal island. The island is relatively small but there are hundreds of seals. It is a bit smelly but much more rewarding to watch the seals in their natural habitat than those in captivity in zoos.

Whales come to the Mossel Bay area from July to October and they are always an awesome sight.

Mossel Bay is perfectly situated to explore the rest of the Garden Route. Numerous little bays are close-by, for a day on the beach.Victoria Bay is very secluded and really tiny. The beach is clean and has a tranquil relaxed atmosphere. Knysna and George deserve a visit.Take a drive through the Knysna forest or a boat ride to the Heads where the Knysna lake enters the sea. One of the most dangerous entrances into the sea. George has lovely wood furniture shops. Look out for the one with the massive wooden chair outside.

For a day with the ostriches and a visit to the Cango Caves venture over the Outenikwa pass to Oudtshoorn. Lots of historical buildings can be seen on the way to the caves. The ostrich farms are also on the way to caves. The Cango Caves is an awesome structure of texture, colour and formations that cannot be missed.

Don't miss out on some fresh fish at one of the many restaurants in Mossel Bay. Find one with a great view over the ocean and spoil your senses with delectable food and picture perfect views.
